Welcome to the Aerosols thematic component of METIS, the EUMETSAT Monitoring and Evaluation of Thematic Information from Space!

METIS Fies is the reference quality monitoring platform providing up-to-date diagnostics of the L2 Near Real Time (NRT) Fire radiative Power product derived from Copernicus Sentinel-3 (CS3) operationally generated in less than 2.5 h!

This product is directly generated by the operational processor: Optimized Fire Radiative Power from Copernicus Sentinel-3 (OFRaP-CS3). OFRaP-CS3 is implemented, maintained, incrementaly evolved and lead autonomously by EUMETSAT, entrusted by the European Commission (EC) and the Copernicus programme.

Current Satellite L2 NRT Sentinel-3 Fire radiative Power Products are from: Sentinel-3 SLSTR-A and -B. Further details are described on the EUMETSAT Operational Algorithm Web page - Copernicus Sentinel-3 NRT Fire Radiative Power (FRP)

All analyses are stratified into 27 Regions of interest (ROI).

Latest evolution, Collection 3.1, was released on 23rd january 2025.

OFRaP-CS3 is one of the EUMETSAT operational processors contributing to the Copernicus Sentinel-3 NRT Atmosphere portfolio (including Fires, Clouds, Water Vapour). More details available on the EUMETSAT NRT Sentinel-3 Atmospheric Composition Webpage.

How does it work?

4 series of Plots in the left menu:.

  1. L2 Maps: Daily maps of Sentinel-3 A, B, Constellation A+B, MODIS Terra, Aqua, and VIRIS SNPP SOAR/Db (NASA ALgorithm).

  2. L2 SLSTR Time Series Statistics: Daily statistics dedicated to the sole SLSTR aerosol monitoring: separated A and B, and combined (A+B).

  3. L2 Match-Ups: Strict L2 Match-up (L2 pxiel-based) between SLSTR and MODIS Terra, or SLSTR and AERONET.   4. L2 Satellite Intercomparison Time-Series Statistics: Daily statistics of satellite differences, typically SLSTR (A, B or A+B) - XX (XX = MODIS Terra, MODIS Aqua, or VIIRS SNPP DB/SOAR). Generally based on global or regional average comparisons (1st step toward representativeness comparisons).

Understanding the right menu
  • Region of Interest: Visualisations / statistics are given for a list of predefined ROIs. See exact coordinates at Link (ROI).

  • Production Platform:
    TCE_XX = Off-line OSSAR-CS3 processor evrsions - Only used for new developments - testing.
    REF = Internal Sentinel-3 Ground-Segment. In theory, it shall be similar to the public ground-segemnt. In practice, delays are osberved due to regular testing internally at EUMETSAT.
    OPE = The official reference Sentinel-3 Ground-Segment. Public S3 NRT Aerosol products are visible there!

  • Parameter in Daily Maps: most of them are common between all sensors. However, some exceptions exist:
  • - "Land Best" and "Land Ocean Best" => Only valid for S3, PMAP, VIIRS SNPP DB. For MODIS (Terra, Aqua), Click on the last items at bottom (Land DB Best, Land Merged DT/DB, Land Ocean Merged DT/DB).

  • When are the plots updated?
  • The Monitoring and CalVal system behind METIS Aerosols are nearly completely automatized, They run every night. Generally, unless exceptions (processing devlays, new deployments), updates are available within a time windows of 24h.
  • Non-S3 maps:
  • MODIS, VIIRS, PMAP maps are "only" vidible for Production Platform == REF.

  • JAVA features:
  • For some figures, you have to click a couple of times on the item labels (only click on "circles" do not wlays work).
    Under regular debugging.
